Streaming Cafe's Podcast on iTunes

I was thrilled last night when I turned on my Apple TV and browsed through the Podcast section.
It only took a quick search with the words "streaming cafe" and there it was... our very first video podcast.
The cool thing is that you don't need an Apple TV, you can subscribe to our video Podcast using any computer that has iTunes installed. You can even get it on your iPhone or iPod touch!
We will put out a new Vodcast (it's the official word for "Video Podcast") every week.
Hurry, subscribe and pass on the good news!

Taking a look back

I know it's getting closer to Christmas, because everything is getting crazy. We got a big snowfall on Monday and it's been Christmas season ever since. In our office we're going full stream on the Christmas and New Years show (our video post-production guy is going to need a break after this).

But, we still have two great show coming up this weekend. Jane Eamon on Friday 8pm PST, a local folk legend that will wow you with her songwriting and unique voice. And The Family Band on Saturday 8pm PST; an east coast indie folk 5 piece that is sure to be a good time. Check out http://janeeamon.com and http://thefamilyband.ca for more info.

What's coming next? A Video podcast. We're really excited to launch a weekly Vodcast which will feature songs and interviews from our shows. We're going to have a Holiday launch, so tune in for our first Vodcast soon!

More info to come.

Andrew Allen coming up in January...

Just added to the calendar for January is Andrew Allen. Fresh off his blistering cold Canadian tour.
Andrew recorded his latest ‘self titled’ EP at Mushroom Studios in Vancouver with producer Jeff Dawson (Daniel Powter, Kelly Rowland, State of Shock) which was released in March of 2009. This new EP earned him the invite to perform at JUNOFest 2009 in Vancouver. With over 300,000 km on the tour van and a drive with the same mileage, this is one artist that you don’t want to miss!
Be sure to catch Andrew @ the Streaming Cafe Jan. 22 8pm PST.
You can check out his new festive song!

Christmas and New Year's with Streaming Cafe

We've had a great few weeks at the Streaming Cafe. We've been slowly adding to our production, marketing and booking teams starting from a small group of 3. The energy in the office is building and all of us are excited to bring Christmas and New Year's shows.

Our Christmas show we've been working on for a few months. We've collected Christmas songs after the live shows from many of the artists that played this fall. Starting on the 21st of December we will have a Christmas show featuring all of these songs.

On December 31st at 5pm PST we will start our New Year's show which will be a look back at the great moments at the Streaming Cafe in 2009. We'll have some amusing anecdotes from our lovely hosts as well as some of the more comical moments we've experienced in our first few months of operation.

In the New Year, we have some great acts booked, and some returning favourites. Returning to the Streaming Cafe in January we have Treelines, David Blair, Fields of Green and Redgy Blackout. We also have new comers Jodi Pederson and Andrew Allen.

Keep your eyes and ears on our site in the next month as we are unveiling some very cool new features.

till next time,

Carey Ott Article from www.discoverrock.com

TV, Film, and Beyond
Carey has been fortunate having "I Wouldn't Do That To You" from the Dualtone Records release of "Lucid Dream" chosen by the Warner TV Group's music producers to be a part of an episode of their new up coming series "Past Life."

This will be the third time the song has been exposed for commercial usage. The others were : Kyle XY, an ABC TV Series. A six month long campaign by JC Penny to re-launch their AZ Jeans Youth brand. Carey's music was the only music heard for six months along with kick ass youth action videos. Soooooo thank you "I Wouldn't Do That To You"!

Next up was a recent mix session with Indianapolis basedNick Vote-Genius Johnson at Carey's Nashville studio early Nov. Directly after those sessions Carey took a week long trip to Road Island to co-produce / arrange and play along with his friend Bohegay Bowes a song that is the featured song of a video project from Sweden. The band members flew in from Sweden with Meat Balls in hand. Good stuff!

Then Boom! He travels to the Great White North, British Columbia, Canada.

Dates in BC include Vancouver, the Okanagan Valley and Whistler Mtn., right at the time of the popular Whistler Film Festival.Amongst this journey he will write and ski with Vancouver performer and recording artist Taylor James. Taylor and Carey have been working on her next release @ Carey's Nashville Studio.

Carey continues to work on his 18 song Human Heart project with Toronto producer Ben Pelchat and Californian, Terry Carleton while at the same time finds time to write or co-write an average of one or two songs a week.

Please check out the E-Card works in progress for a sneak preview of "HUMAN HEART.

Lots more but Less is More and you've only got so much time to look this over.

Acres and Acres, Jon Mckiel

Well we had a busy weekend at the Streaming Cafe with three shows. Thursday night was a success raising over 800 dollars for Free The Children. Louise Kent put on an entertaining show.

On Friday we had Jon-Rae Fletcher, Acres and Acres and Jon Mckiel. Two acts (Acres and Acres, Jon Mckiel) got held up in traffic on their way from Vancouver Island to Kelowna. Jon-Rae very capably took the first set with the other acts arriving mid way through it. After a hasty soundcheck during the break Acres and Acres took it away, very impressively.

It was well worth the wait, Acres and Acres and Jon Mckiel put on a spectacular show for a packed house. The show was so good we've opted to put up three archives (4 songs from every artist) up on our site. check it out.

AND, on Saturday we had the talented indie band from Vancouver, Redgy Blackout. It power packed weekend at the Streaming Cafe.

Here are a few videos and pics from this weekend.

Great Folk Music - Paul O'Brien

This weekend we had a great show on Friday with Paul O'Brien. I knew from the moment I walked into the cafe and saw Paul working up a version of Little Drummer Boy on the boran we were in for a great night of folk music. It only got better at sound check with Paul's exception guitar tone and soothing voice. Paul's songwriting was also excellent throughout the set. A very enjoyable concert.

Ari Neufeld and Kim McMechan

After a few difficulties, the Eisenhauer, Sheree Plett and Lance Odegard show is rebroadcasting. It was a great show. To have three songwriters playing and backing each other up makes for a great energy. The three songwriters also brought a great diversity. Sheree Plett a great lyricist, Eisenhauer the melodist and Lance Odegard the understated-ist. Sheree and Eisenhauer were here before so I had an extra keen eye on Lance who did not disappoint. Check out his two new albums at www.lanceodegard.com. The songs "Oregon" and "Entropy" really stuck out to me (both on his new records).

We're gearing up this week for a killer weekend with Kim McMechan and Ari Neufeld. Ari's recently put out a new CD. The new record "The Lost Tapes (vol 4)" draws together his captivating live show and adds instrumentation to produce a wonderfully raw studio recording. It's going to be two great shows.

Here is a sneak peak at Ari and Kim the last times they played at the Streaming Cafe.

Distinctively Canadiana

I stumbled upon this review of Eisenhaur's new album "time of year." Josiah Hughes, Exclaim! magazine, says Eisenahuer and Plett have a "distinctively Canadian approach to song."That makes me think  that Eisenhauer and Sheree Plett will be the perfect beginning to fall. A distinctively Canadian fall I might add.
Here is the full review from Exclaim! magazine

Vancouver, BC-based indie pop quintet Eisenhauer — fronted by married couple Jeremy Eisenhauer and Sheree Plett — have proven themselves withTime of Year, their sophomore album. Like their label chief and producer Jonathan Anderson, the band explore an often quiet, distinctly Canadian approach to song craft. Complete with lush guitars and a muted rhythm section, the band paint an ideal backdrop for their soothing harmonies. Songs like "What Have I Done?" and the title track are perfected in their wintry lull, while "Feel The Same" and "Sunday" show an up-tempo side. In feebler hands, this music could come across as boring but on Time of Year, Eisenhauer prove they have the restraint to work best in hushed tones. (Anniedale)

On Saturday we're looking forward to the flavourful indie pop of Behind Saphire. Hailing from the Lower Mainland this pop duo promised to put on a great show.

The Canadian Sound

What a show we had this Saturday at the Streaming Cafe. One of the best yet. Liam and Brent Titcomb packed out the cafe and put on a spell binding performance. All in all it was great music in support of a great organization WarChild.
And after the holiday weekend everybody is back to work. It feels like the summer is over and we're moving quickly in the next season. It's time to trade in your coronas for hopheads and listen to some long winded singers in place of the snappy pop songs of summer. Well at least that's what I'll be doing; just listening to some Matthew Barber.
Liam, during the Saturday show, referenced the audience as being Canadian, doing a Canadian thing listening to Brent Titcomb and his son. And just a little while ago we had Treelines which Rhys Albrecht, the host, called a quintessential Canadian rock band. It's odd talking about music that has a Canadian sound but I think we could say that both Treelines, Matthew Barber, Liam and Breant Titcomb all have a Canadian sound. And that is the kind of sound I want to hear going into the next season.

Mr. Producer.

Liam Titcomb with Brent Titcomb

Well it's been busy at the Streaming Cafe the last couple weeks. Last friday Loren, a folk artist from Australia, put on an amazing concert at the end of his Canadian tour. We are now getting ready to host Liam Titcomb with Brent Titcomb (Lee Harvey Osmond): Two very accomplished musicians playing together in support of WarChild.
I've been listening almost everyday to Rich Terfry on CBC radio 2 drive. He's known as a member of Buck 65 but he's got a knack for putting on a great radio show. He puts together an eclectic mix of indie folk, roots, rock and RnB music. What I like about the show is that Rich often tells you where the artist he's playing are playing live that night all across Canada. I heard Lee Harvey Osmond, a great alt-country band with Brent Titcomb and Tom Wilson (ikons in the Canadian music scene), was playing in Kelowna just down the road from my house. Now Brent's joining Liam Titcomb at the Streaming Cafe.
Check out the show sometime (now on the cbc iphone app around the world) and on the CBC radio 2 weekdays from 330pm to 7pm local time.
Abandin All Hope, a punk band from Fort McMurray, is with us this friday and Liam and Brent Titcomb will put on the show Saturday in benefit of WarChild. It's going to be a great weekend at the Streaming Cafe. All the shows start at 8pm Pacific.
thanks,
Mr. Producer.

David Blair and Treelines

This weekend we had some awesome shows at the cafe. Friday was packed out, spilling on to the street, and Treelines put on a great show. Treelines are a talented group for sure and the audience got a great show. And Treelines were the first to play on our brand new website.

For more of them check out www.treelinesmusic.com.

On Saturday we had David Blair with Paisley Jura in their first show together. A collage of styles made for a very interesting show. Check out this cool music for David Blair's song "Hurt So Hard."
He also has some cool video blogs at www.youtube.com/davidblairmusic

David Blair is a great example of an artist who taken advantage of the web 2.0 world. He's got tones of videos on youtube with him covering all kinds of artists and playing his own songs. A great marketing campaign for sure. David Blair's been touring his but off for the last two months and is just about to finish up his tour.

Check out David Blair's concert with Paisley Jura on our website.

NEW STREAMINGCAFE.NET

It's a very exciting week at the streaming cafe. We have just launched a completely new website. It's simply beautiful. It's a whole new streaming cafe.

The new streamingcafe.net features a sleek new style like youtube meets apple.com. And with great bands and artists coming in the next few weeks the streaming cafe is ready to bring music to the world.

We've done a whole reworking from bottom to top. If that's not enough we have some big shows coming up. This weekend Australian folk singer Loren and local singer/songwriter Ange Alero.

Indie Music - Brock Geiger

The Beatles, among other things, gave us the perfect pop song: 2 and a half minutes of repetitive catchy guitar driven rock and roll. As partly a reaction to popular culture indie music often strays from this formulae. So, to understand the music of recent cafe performer Brock Geiger we need to look at the importance of indie music as a reaction, a protest but also a by-product of pop music.

Any who caught the show will be quick to notice Geiger's lack of repetition, a standard way of making songs "catchy" as well as his extended 6-8 minute songs. It is important to note that my definition of indie music is such that the musicians have subscribed to the ideals of the counter-culture movement and not simply published their own record.

Geiger crafted his songs in such a way that there was an obvious "tipping of the hat" to the tradition of pop songs while also a step beyond into the oblivion of indie music. There was a sense of journey and meaning to his set, but also of reverence for the ground he was stepping on (that being pop music).

These ideas will undoubtably come up in the next fews weeks at the cafe as we have a wide array of indie bands and singers.

You can check out Brock Geiger on our website in the PREVIOUS SHOWS section as well as on our YOUTUBE channel (www.youtube.com/streamingcafe)

Poor Little Rich Girl

Young bands have a certain edge. As if they are playing things for the first time, which may be the case. Poor Little Rich Girl, a Vernon based indie rock band played at the cafe this Saturday. Like many young bands they get by on energy and creativity. What struck me was the detailed guitar effect and strong chilly pepper esque rhythm section. And although they claimed not to know “The Cure” strong 80’s prog rock influence.

Poor Little Rich Girl may be a new band but they’ve played enough shows together to have some tight well knit songs. With their enigmatic lead singer they might also have the look to catch national and even international attention.

What’s exciting about young bands is getting to hear and see the process. The songs and sounds often aren’t as polished and this opens an audience’s ear to the sounds of striving, the sounds of practice, not of perfection. That said, part of the pull towards indie music is a pull towards imperfection on purpose.

Overall, it was a great evening at the streaming cafe.

Justin Hewitt The Art of Performing

Last week at the cafe we had a wonderful Victoria, BC based singer/ songwriter named Justin Hewitt (www.justinhewitt.com) perform. His show was great to watch and kept my attention (which is hard to do as a solo performer). Seeing an experienced performer is completely different than stumbling upon a open mic sort of performer; they capture your imagination quickly and demand a kind of attention from their audience. Hewitt's songs were well crafted but what drew me in to this show was his stories and his intensity as a performer. I watched this show not in the cafe, but in the V.A.N (the Video Audio Neurocentre of the cafe, which is actually a van) on a five inch screen, a undoubtably hard interface for a performer to penetrate.
My point, probably an obvious one, is that experience is a necessity as a performer. Not experience as a singer and guitar player (although that is important) but experience playing music in front of an audience. The ability to take an audience on a journey with you even when they aren't necessarily familiar with your music. Justin Hewitt did that.

Check out some of the show at www.streamingcafe.net,
